MCEA Member Appreciation Day 2019

When MCEA parties, Maryland comes out to party with it. The was shown on Saturday September 14th when elected officials and union dignitaries from Baltimore and the surrounding counties joined MCEA for a Member Appreciation event. The event also honored the longest serving president in MCEA history, Linda Day. The day was gorgeous with warm-moderate temperatures and the rain held off so the outdoor festivities could be enjoyed. Those in attendance tasted delicious burgers and hot dogs fresh off the grill and children in attendance enjoyed the face-painting vendors. There was a comedy act and a dance performance that entertained all in attendance. Additionally, vendors sold unique and custom wears as well as vendors selling fruits and other trinkets and knick-knacks.

AFT-Maryland was there to support the union with a table for voter registration as well as informational updates on the on-going changes with the retiree prescription drug benefits plan. Other union dignitaries in attendance were Ernie Grecco and Fred Mason, past presidents of the Baltimore Central Labor Council AFL-CIO and the Maryland/DC AFL-CIO respectively. Each gave remarks saluting President Day as a labor leader and fighter for workers in the state of Maryland. Current Baltimore CLC AFL-CIO president Jermaine Jones also delivered remarks singing President Day’s praises. Baltimore city Councilman Kristofer Burnett along with a representative from Mayor Jack Young’s office presented President Day with a citation  in honor of her work as did representatives from Baltimore county Executive John Olszewski’s office and Governor Larry Hogan’s office.

MCEA staff showed their appreciation for President Day as well, presenting her with flowers and showering her with kind words. When President Day addressed those in attendance she thanked the members for being the backbone of the union and promised to continue to fight for state workers in Annapolis and all across the state. She re-committed MCEA to their partnerships with AFT-Maryland and the AFL-CIO. After her remarks, the DJ had everyone young and old enthralled and engaged with line dances and popular songs.
