As a union, we are fighting to make college affordable to student debt manageable. We maintain www.forgivemystudentdebt.org as a resource for members who need to learn the language of free and underused federal programs that help many student loan borrowers lower their monthly payments, and in some cases, even have their debt forgiven.

Back to School Block Party, East Baltimore

The AFT-Maryland teamed up with the Baltimore Teachers Union, DTLR, and a number of other community groups to send children back to school the right way. The state federation spent Saturday afternoon in East Baltimore grilling hot dogs, shooting hoops, painting faces, passing out book bags and a doing a number of other exciting activities.

Negotiations Update

As of the beginning of August, UUP (our parent union) and the state have been in negotiations for the successor to the contract that expired July 1st, 2016.  At this time meetings have been scheduled into the fall to continue the talks.  The other major unions negotiating contracts (CSEA, PEF) are in various stages of the negotiations process along with us.  It is currently our hope the contract will be settled in Fall 2017/Early 2018.  In accordance with the procedures from previous contracts, you must be on payroll in order to receive your retro payment.  At this time, it is ap

MCEA Saves the Job of a Wrongfully Accused State Employee

Ms. Shannon Morris, a Program Administrator for the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), was removed from her job in November, 2016 for allegedly pushing another employee and providing false statements to management about the incident. MCEA took Ms. Morris’ case to the Office of Administrative Appeals (OAH) and won her job back!

Officer Alfred Allen

It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved co-worker, member and friend Officer Alfred Allen on August 14, 2017. Officer Allen began his career with the Baltimore County Department of Corrections on December 10, 2001. Many have had the honor to serve with this wonderful man and have been able to call him a true friend. Officer Allen will be deeply missed. Our deepest condolences go out to the Officer Allen’s family.
