As part of this year's back-to-school tour, AFT President Randi Weingarten spoke to teachers at Washington, D.C.'s Alice Deal Middle School during a breakfast hosted by the Washington Teachers' Union on Sept. 17. She later greeted parents and students as they arrived at the school.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports today that Scott Walker and Republicans in the state legislature have hatched a scheme to weaken Wisconsin's civil service protections, which have prevented politicians from using government jobs as patronage for their supporters and from firing employees for political reasons for more than a century.

Shakopee High School science teacher Billy Koenig has been chosen as one of 10 Education Ambassadors from the United States to attend the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in Paris, France from November 30 to December 11. Koenig is beginning his tenth year as a teacher in the Shakopee School District. He teaches a variety of courses including Biology, Advanced Placement Biology, and Environmental Ethics/Ecology.
Unfortunately, the Cape May Trip for October 13-14 has to be canceled
because there was not enough response. A day trip to the 9-11 Memorial is
being planned. Watch this space for further information!
