Seeking Alternative State Revenue

It is quite evident that the state of California cannot cut its way out of the $20 billion deficit it is currently facing.  While state-wide politicians seem hesitant to raise the necessary revenue required to run the state at an effective level, it is up to us to raise awareness.

The following link discusses the benefits to closing the prop 13 loophole.  Please sign up: www.closetheloophole.com/

Proposition 13 has, since its inception in the late 1970s, shifted the tax burden from commercial properties to residential properties because industrial property tends to change hands less frequently.  It is time to tax commercial and residential properties at different values.  For example, Disneyland, which has not ever changed ownership, is taxed at about a nickel per square foot.

Additionally, proposition 13 stifles the creation of new small businesses by requiring them to compete against other businesses that are taxed at much lower rates.

On a related note, California is the only state that requires a 2/3rds majority to pass a budget.  This super-majority requirement leads to a minority being able to hold the budget process hostage leading to gridlock and economic chaos.  The following site intends to work to change the budget process back to a simple majority: www.californiansfordemocracy.com/

Please join these websites and donate money or time to help get the word out.

It is time for change.  We need to start raising awareness and pushing our politicians to create a democratic and fiscally responsible budget.

Eligibility and Issues of Officers of Administration

In this article we discuss the issue of eligibility for OAs and note some issues of particular concern to OAs. Supervisors will not be automatically excluded from the bargaining union, contrary to rumors that have been floating around campus. Click on the article title for more details.

NECW Presidents Message January 2010

January 19, 2010

Dear Fellow Early Childhood Workers,

As we start a New Year let us not forget the past. We formed this Union so that our voices would be heard and that business would be done in an open and transparent manner. That everyone was treated fairly and granted the same rights.

As we celebrate our Second Anniversary of many brave and courageous people who voted YES for the formation of Northcoast Early Childhood Workers we are still working on a fair contract. Progress is very slow and your members of the Negotiations team have worked many hours to try to reach agreement with NCS management on many issues.

I like this quote from President Barack Obama, “Don’t think for a minute that power concedes without a fight. We’re not afraid of a fight when all of us work together; we have what it takes to win.”

We have new buttons that state “Contract Now”. I would encourage all members to wear these buttons to let everyone know we need to complete this contract soon.

STAND UP, SPEAK UP AND BE HEARD

In  Unity,

Jennifer Turley

President of Local 6397

Northcoast Early Childhood Workers

Scenes From Galt High School

As the District takes on more debt by moving forward with the $2 million loan and makes plans to cut $1.5 million from the budget this spring, it is important to keep in mind the conditions at Galt High SChool.  Last Wednesday a ceiling tile feel to the floor in the 100s wing due to a serious water leak.  The tile almost hit a teacher and student.  While maintenance workers did a good and efficient job of fixing the tile, there is much work and investment to do to keep GHS safe.  Here are images from GHS.  Please also see more photos in the photo album link.
