MCEA President, Linda Day attended the Comptrollers Labor Advisory Council on September 28, 2016. Labor leaders from across the state participated in a roundtable discussion with Maryland's Comptroller, the Honorable Peter Franchot. A major topic of the discussion centered around the 1.4 billion dollar budget shortfall that Maryland is facing and the ongoing concerns of the lagging growth rate of the state's pension investments that are derived from the stock market. The 2016 AFT National Convention in Minneapolis, MN was one for the ages. Not only was it the 100th anniversary of the union, but there were a number of high profile elected officials and social justice activists that addressed the convention. The members even took to the streets themselves to put the rhetoric into action. The AFT-Maryland delegation was not only well represented but they also had a strong impact on the presentations and displays during the convention.

The second day of the AFT National Convention in Minneapolis, MN was one that focused on human and civil rights. Important national figures such as Rashard Robinson from Color of Change and Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin both addressed the convention. They spoke about the need for justice and calming of violence from police against citizens as well as retaliatory attacks on police.  They were well received and members were eager to hear from them; particularly Fulton, given the resilient strength she’s shown in the very public murder of her son.

Day One of the AFT biannual National Convention got off to a rousing start. Delegates and visitors from all across the nation convened on Minneapolis, MN, for the 100th anniversary of the organization (#AFT100). Members kicked off the morning with a breakfast hosted by the Baltimore Teachers Union. AFT-Maryland President Marietta English addressed the breakfast and laid out what the members from Maryland could expect moving forward during the convention.

On May 18, 2016, MCEA attended the annual Employee Appreciation Day in Carroll County. The event paid tribute to the Carroll County Government employees who, through their labor and dedication, keep the County moving, 24/7. MCEA has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Carroll County Government which provides MCEA the right to represent the employees in  matters of workplace issues and disciplinary actions and to meet annually with the County Commissioners.

Baltimore County Public Employees had an opportunity to meet and greet the leadership of the two local unions affiliated with AFT-Maryland, which represent them. Baltimore County Federation of Public Employees (BCFPE) and the Baltimore County Federation of Public Health Nurses (BCFPHN) executive boards welcomed and engaged members at the Drumcastle Center in Towson, MD.

Members had an opportunity to express both appreciation and concerns to their unions. Some asked about tuition reimbursement opportunities in the contract as well as work conditions and requirements made of them by the county.

On May 9, 2016 MCEA President, Linda Day, Michael Brown, Legislative Chair, and Labor Relations Specialist, Michael Keeney met with Lt. Governor, Boyd K. Rutherford. Ms. Day expressed her concerns of bullying in the workplace which has become incredibly prevalent throughout State Agencies. She emphasized that this unwanted demeaning behavior has led to high levels of stress and anxiety, serious illnesses and job abandonment of our union members. She urged the Lt. Citizens across Maryland took to the polls on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 to elect new leaders for everything from President of the United States to local judges. Members of AFT-Maryland, and supporters of candidates across Baltimore City and Baltimore County volunteered their efforts and time to back union endorsed candidates.
